Helpful Info for Students

Students can begin taking driver’s education classes at age 15 years and 5 months. A learner’s permit is NOT required in order to attend the classroom portion of driver training.

Teens under age 18 can obtain their learner’s permit at age 15 years and 6 months. Learner’s permits are obtained at a branch of the Ohio BMV. A picture I.D. card will issued with the permit packet. NEXT complete the BMV exam with a passing grade and have the paper portion validated. To drive you must have both the picture ID and validated permit paper to drive.

The validated permit paper and picture ID is required to be in your possession while driving. Teens (under age 18) are required to drive a minimum of 50 hours with their parents or legal guardian. Ten of those hours are to be driven at night. A voucher must be signed and notarized stating that this portion of the license process has been completed. (voucher is part of the permit package). A student cannot take the driving test without this. AND a Certificate of Completion from an approved driver’s education course, if they wish to be licensed before reaching their 18^th birthday.

After successful completion of the required written exam, teens can begin driving portion of the learning process. Any teen that has not reached their 16^th birthday can drive only with a licensed parent or legal guardian or state certified driving instructor. Once teen is 16 years of age, they can drive with a licensed driver over the age of 21. (Licensed driver must not be impaired (aka intoxicated) - please get parents permission) The student must have the Permit picture I.D. card and the validated permit paper in their possession while driving.

The permit is valid for one year. If permit expires, is lost, or destroyed, A new permit package may be purchased again and the written exam must be repeated. A waiting period of 6 months is required from the original issued date before applying for your driving license. As a driving school we are required to make all classes and driving instruction available for completion within 6 months of the first class session with the driving school. So why not come and get your classroom portion and drives (BTW) completed with us during these first 6 months. Please do not wait until last month to schedule classes and drives with us. (You may be surprised with a waiting list during our busy seasons).
